Beyond Literature Unit 3: Setting

Moving along in our third lesson in the Beyond Literature Program, I have created by discussing setting in literature (look for lessons 1 and 2 HERE). This lesson focuses on looking at setting as equal to place, time, and environment within literature and how it affects the story. Setting can also change throughout the literature.

As with the other two lessons already in this more significant unit, there are teacher and student notes and a PowerPoint Presentation to help teach the concept. There are also two activities to enhance your student's understanding of the concept. The activity Same Picture-Four Settings has your students redraw the same picture in ways based on setting choices that they get to either choose from or pick from a bowl/hat. The second activity, Describe the Setting, allows your student to practice their writing skills and how they would describe the picture's setting if they were an author. I've included several photos to choose from or offer variety within your home/school.

Find the complete unit HERE.

I'm still creating activities to share with you with some mentor text with settings. But for mentor texts, I recommend using the books The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judy Barret and Ronald Barret, and Owl Moon by Kevin Henkes. These books offer ample descriptions (and beautiful pictures) to enhance the story's setting.
