Yesterday, I shared our curriculum choices for our Together Subjects for 2023. Today I am going to share our choices for our 7th Grader Mouse. This year she will be more independent with a lot of her work, which I’m both excited for and scared of because it means she is growing up. My goal is to help her be primarily independent in her learning by 9th grade and ultimately independent as a young adult.
First, I will share the few staple subjects we have been using for several years.
SONLIGHT: This year she will be working through G: World History Year 1 of 2. I also added in their accompanying Lap Book. We love the reading aloud time together, and I love learning with her, and I also enjoy not having to plan it all out (which is why we switched to Sonlight several years ago).
MATH U SEE: Mouse will finish fractions with Epsilon and then move onto learning about percentages in Zeta.
ALL ABOUT LEARNING: For 7th Grade we will finish All About Spelling Level 6 and then move onto All About Spelling Level 7.
INSTITUTE OF EXCELLENCE IN WRITING: We will continue to alternate through Student Structure and Style B1 and Fix It Level 3: Robin Hood.
Lastly, is what will be new this year in her workload, for independence and because they are things, she will need to have in her arsenal entering high school.
WORLD GEOGRAPHY: While some of her world Geography will be done together as a family, I also am having her do daily World Geography by using 180 Days of Geography :6th Grade. While she is technically in 7th grade, we are using the 6th grade level because she hasn’t done anything like this before and I didn’t want to overwhelm her.
FRENCH: I’m requiring foreign language at the middle school level, as an introduction, not as a mastery concept. She will be using Rosetta Stone, which we purchased lifetime access to, and she will continue to use Duo-lingo as a fun bonus tool.
LITERATURE: While our SONLIGHT curriculum has readers for her, I felt we were missing some literature components, as well as some just overall good literature that is left out of Sonlight’s reader and read aloud selections. I will go more in depth about this in March, but basically, she will choose a few books from a list I have generated, and then she will be completing some “book report” type projects to test her reading comprehension. We will also work with her younger sister Thumper learning some of these basic elements of literature concepts.
