In history with Thumper, we worked our way through American Revolution and into the forming of the United States this quarter. I have personally enjoyed the mini-biographies in our Hero’s and Happenings text with Sonlight K-HBL. In addition to the history texts, the read alouds have also been impressive this quarter. We have read Roxie and the Hooligans and Just Dance. I also added in Magic Tree House: Revolutionary War on Wednesday and Mysteries, according to Humphrey. These additional books have replaced titles we already read aloud last year before Sonlight revamped some of their levels.
In math, she conquered skip counting by 10s and 5s, which laid the foundation for learning about dimes and nickles and then learning about adding money. She also practiced mental math and has now transitioned into regrouping and column addition. She enjoys the freedom to do problems on her own once she learns the concept with me.
Thumper has picked up the pace in All About Reading Level 2 and has completed up to Lesson 33. She has learned the concepts of silent e, the ee vowel team, find the gold rule, along with -ar and or phonograms. This quarter I also started her on Sonlight’s Level 1 readers as a confidence booster. We are almost through the first I Can Read It book. I let her read a story or two on the days she is not reading a story in All About Reading. I am looking to add All About Spelling Level 1 next quarter. She is more than ready; I, however, am not.
Along with her school reading, she has enjoyed reading a lot more independently, and I believe she is picking up on words and concepts we haven’t discussed yet in her lessons. She also has been enjoying reading to her Sister Bird, and Bird loves every minute of it.
