2nd Quarter Wrap Up 2020: Thumper Kinder/First

2nd Quarter Wrap Up 2020: Thumper Kinder/First

We are cruising right along with Thumper at her exploration of World Cultures in Sonlight’s Core A.  This quarter we have gone through the Middle Ages, Ancient Civilization, Old  World Europe, Exploration, studied the life of Louise Braille, traveled into the American West with Pioneers, then into the Industrial Revolution, and have ended up in WWI.  She has made a Viking ship and weaving, a catapult with the help of her Daddy-o.  I have been reading extra read- alouds to her (since I usually read the bigger read aloud to both girls at lunch0.  This quarter we have finished the Mercy Watson Series (for the second time) along with the book From Deckawoo Drive: Leroy Ninker Saddles Up, Paulet Meets the Ghost Racoon, and Where are you going Baby Lincoln?.  We then read the first book in the Unicorn Diaries series (I anticipate her getting the rest for Christmas this year or sooner if we can ever go sopping like we used to).  We also read Socks and finished the quarter reading aloud Stuart Little.  I will pick up with her next quarter with books from the Core as I will shift the extra readers, I still have left with us to our lunch time reading instead.

This quarter in math she has finished all her addition concepts which included the addition of doubles plus one, making ten, making 9 and the few extra addition facts.  She is now onto subtraction.  So far, we have worked on subtraction minus 1 and minus zero, minus 2, and we finished minus 9 at the end of the quarter.

Reading is also going well with Thumper.  This quarter we have read several stories from the readers (the average is 1-2 stories now after each new concept).  She has learned the sight worlds No and For, the consonant team ck, ng and nk.  She has also learned about compound words and plurals.

Prior to deciding we would be headed home in September, I had a fear that I would be running out of curriculum for Thumper by the end of the next quarter, as she is advancing not only through math faster than I had anticipated (and planned for), but she is also flying through reading as well.  Both of these levels are waiting for us back in Wisconsin.  I may still have to supplement a little bit but I think reviewing math concepts and rereading readers along with continued practice of the word cards wont be a problem for us for a week or two until we are home if it indeed comes to that.
